Pettitte to pitch in Triple-A for Yankees today
[info]fainaot

KANSAS CITY, Mo.-- If the Yankees want to bring Andy Pettitte to the big leagues, he would fit perfectly into Phil Hughes’ spot.

Pettitte and Hughes start Sunday in different parts of the country. Pettitte pitches for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in Rochester and Hughes goes against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

The Yankees have been vague about Pettitte’s program beyond his sixth minor league outing Sunday, but he could replace Hughes in the rotation and not force manager Joe Girardi to juggle to insert the 39-year-old lefty.

In five starts, Hughes has not instilled confidence he can return to his 18-win form from 2010. He is 1-4 with a 7.48 ERA and has allowed 38 baserunners in 21²/ innings. Opposing hitters are batting .298.

With Mariano Rivera out for the season, David Robertson and Rafael Soriano, previously used in the seventh and eighth innings, will shift to handle the eighth and ninth.

So there is a need for a reliever to work in front of those two right-handers. Hughes, who prefers starting, was dominant out of the bullpen in 2009.

“I don’t worry about that stuff,’’ Hughes said before the Yankees' 5-1 loss to the Royals Saturday night. “I let the organization make the decisions. I pitch and do what I am told.’’

The Yankees are waiting to see how Pettitte comes out of today’s outing. Triple-A is the highest level of competition he has faced since starting his comeback in March.

There is another option for the Yankees, who still have voices in the organization who believe Hughes is a starter: They can shift David Phelps back to the bullpen. He was working effectively in long relief before replacing a struggling Freddy Garcia in the rotation. Phelps made his major league debut as a starter Thursday night against the Royals and allowed two runs and six hits in four innings.

“I want to see how he does [today],’’ Girardi said of Pettitte. “I want to see how he bounces back after 90-plus pitches in his last outing.’’

***

The Yankees finally got some positive medical news when an MRI exam on prize pitching prospect Jose Campos’ right elbow showed no structural damage and just inflammation.

Campos, who came from Seattle with Michael Pineda for Jesus Montero and Hector Noesi, is on the DL with Single-A Charleston.

In five games, he is 3-0 with a 4.01 ERA and has struck out 26 batters with eight walks in 24 ²/ innings.

The news on Campos comes inside a two-week period when Pineda underwent season-ending shoulder surgery and Mariano Rivera suffered a season-ending ACL tear.

***

Alex Rodriguez, who went 0-for-3 with a walk, was the DH for the fourth time in the past six games, but Girardi said there wasn’t a health issue influencing his decision.

“He is fine, I am just trying to keep him as fresh as I can,’’ Girardi said.

Rodriguez, who has been the DH eight times this season, said it takes getting used to not being in the field.

“It’s an adjustment because I love to be out there every single day,’’ said Rodriguez, whose DH days will shrink when outfielders Brett Gardner and Nick Swisher return from injuries.

Rodriguez rides the bike, looks at film and stretches in between at-bats.

“And I am driving people crazy in here,’’ Rodriguez said of the clubhouse.

Swisher participated in batting practice and ran the bases aggressively, so there is a chance he could play Sunday after missing six games with a left hamstring injury.

“It’s possible,’’ Girardi said. “I want to make sure he feels OK. “We have missed his bat, no doubt about it.’’

Swisher leads the Yankees in RBIs (23) and is second in homers (six).

Gardner took batting practice on the field. He is on the DL with a strained right elbow and is likely to need one or two minor league rehab games before being activated. He could begin the assignment Monday.

***

Girardi said Eric Chavez is improving. Chavez is on the seven-day DL with a concussion.

“He said he feels better and he sees the doctor [Monday],’’ Girardi said. “He still has some hurdles to clear.’’

***

Kansas football coach Charlie Weis was on the field during batting practice and chatted with Girardi, Derek Jeter, and third-base coach Rob Thomson, a KU alum.

Stemkowski heroics weren’t enough for '71 Rangers
[info]fainaot

As Pete Stemkowski sat with his son and watched the Rangers and Capitals go through one overtime after another Wednesday night, he couldn’t help but relive his own playing days 40 years earlier.

“I couldn’t go to sleep for two hours after it ended,” Stemkowski said yesterday. “I was so wound up.”

Marian Gaborik’s goal late in the third overtime, which lifted the Rangers to a 2-1 victory over the Capitals, handing the Blueshirts a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-seven series, brought memories for Stemkowski, 68. His own triple-overtime game-winner in 1971 gave the Rangers a 3-2 victory over the Blackhawks in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup semifinals.

WE WIN! The Rangers teammates celebrate Wednesday’s 2-1, triple-overtime Game 3 win over the Capitals, which reminded former Ranger Pete Stemkowski of his triple-OT winner in Game 6 of the 1971 Stanley Cup finals vs. the Blackhawks (inset).UPI; William Jacobellis

“I kid around with people who weren’t at the game,” Stemkowski said with a laugh. “I tell them it was an end-to-end rush and that I deked the goalie and put it top corner ... but the people who were there knew what happened.”

What happened was Stemkowski scooped up a rebound of a Tim Horton shot and put it in the net from a spot close to where Gaborik scored from to keep the Rangers alive and push the series to a seventh game.

As Wednesday night’s game wore on, Stemkowski, a center during his playing days, had an inkling that fellow center Brad Richards, who wound up setting up Gaborik’s game winner, could make the play the Rangers needed to get the win.

“I saw Richards with that little extra step, and I liked what I saw,” Stemkowski said. “And if you give Brad Richards the puck inside the other team’s zone, like any good centerman he knows what do.

“Gaborik got open for that split-second, the puck was on his stick and, bingo, it was in the net.”

As cameras kept cutting to the faces of various players on the benches for both teams, Stemkowski could relate to the things going through their minds.

“After a while, the longer it goes, you just become numb,” he said. “If you notice on the bench, there’s not a lot of rah-rah talk. ... They all are going out on the ice not wanting to make that mistake that could cost your team the hockey game.”

After Stemkowski’s goal forced Game 7, the Rangers were unable to get the decisive win over the Blackhawks. But Stemkowski said that though Wednesday’s game will be memorable, the players on either side won’t be thinking about it when the puck drops for Game 4 tomorrow afternoon.

“Players are the kind of guys that aren’t focused on the last game or two,” he said.” They usually are pretty locked in on what’s coming up.

“Both teams are obviously exhausted, but I’m sure they’ll be focused on [tomorrow’s] game.”

Best Buy's chief marketing officer leaves
[info]fainaot

Another executive at Best Buy has left the company, the consumer electronics retailer said Thursday.

Former Chief Marketing Officer Barry Judge is no longer with the Minneapolis company. The company said he left to "explore the next chapter in his career" but did not offer more specifics.

The news comes weeks after Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn abruptly resigned after the embattled consumer electronics chain launched an internal investigation into his "personal conduct." Best Buy has convened a search committee to find his replacement.

Judge joined Best Buy in 1999 as a member of the company's e-commerce team and was named chief marketing officer in 2008.

The company did not give details on who would replace him but said in a statement that "Best Buy is taking advantage of the opportunity to leverage the skills and experiences of additional senior leaders."

Even without the CEO drama, Best Buy has been facing difficulties. It faces slower sales of expensive items like TVs, plus increased competition from Amazon.com and discount stores like Target.

The company said last month it would close some of its big-box stores, cut 400 corporate jobs and trim $800 million in costs. Best Buy plans to open 100 smaller, more profitable Best Buy Mobile stores.

Best Buy shares fell 19 cents to $21.91 during midday trading.

INSIDE LACROSSE: Crusaders step up after move down
[info]fainaot

Archbishop Stepinac put last season behind it quickly and definitively.

“The first game we won showed us that we can break the losing streak and get out of our slump and actually win some games,” senior midfielder Nick Shaw said.

The Crusaders suffered through a 0-19 campaign last season playing in the NYCHSAA Class AA division along with powers Iona Prep and Fordham Prep. They also lost three non-league games in double overtime. This year Stepinac is the team people are chasing, unbeaten so far in the Catholic ‘A’ league.

First-year head man James Goldman, who was an assistant a year ago, was most impressed with the team's early season two-goal loss to St. Mary’s. Stepinac is 7-6 overall, including a five-game winning streak. It owns wins over Xaverian, St. Joseph by the Sea, Tottenville and defending division champion Mount St. Michael.

“With everything clicking it’s a lot better for the kids to come to practice every day to know that their hard work has paid off,” Goldman said.

One of the biggest reasons for their success is the emergence of junior attack Spencer O’Toole, who has 31 goals and 21 assists this season. In the past the bulk of the Crusaders goals have come from midfielders like Andrew Murray. Dom Vallario, Christian Lopez and Shaw have also stepped up and scored more.

“He learned a lot from this year and he’s kind of responding this year,” Goldman said of O’Toole.

The defense is physical and intimidating led by freshman Dylan DeMuro, who has the job of marking opponent’s best attacks. Stepinac is also bolstered by the return of Caleb Gilligan-Evan, the school’s star fullback. He didn’t play last year to focus on football and will attend the College of Holy Cross next year. Goalie Bobby DiNapoli played against some of the area’s best teams and year ago and it’s translated into success for him this season.

“They all play football,” Shaw said. “They are all big strong kids. It’s the intimidation factor. A lot of teams don’t want to go to the crease. They will just be a little bit scared of our defense.”

Stepinac isn’t afraid of the challenges ahead. Those included a date with Fordham Prep this week and games against Iona Prep and division rival Monsignor Farrell, possibly for first place, still remaining. No matter what happens from here on out, the year has already been a success rebuilding the confidence and image around the program.

“It’s really going well,” Shaw said. “We are winning a couple of games and hopefully in the future we can move up and compete with those higher-up teams.”

YouTube set to star in sports
[info]fainaot

Google’s YouTube is making a new pitch for sports fans.

YouTube is set to announce a new programming deal with a major sports league today at the NewFronts, a digital gathering where online video providers hope to court advertisers in the same way the TV networks do.

The goal is to grab a sliver of the $10.9 billion advertisers spent on cable and broadcast sports programming last year. Traditional broadcasters aired some 42,500 live hours of sport last year, and YouTube doesn’t want to be left out of the picture.

While parent Google is sitting on a $45 billion cash pile, YouTube isn’t ponying up for new sports rights. Rather, it is pursuing a strategy of original sports programming and niche channels.

In the first quarter, YouTube launched several targeted sports channels, although viewership is tiny compared with mainstream sports. They include the Red Bull channel, created in partnership with the drinks brand, which has 415,000 subscribers and counts GM as an advertiser. It also has the action sports-centric Network A, with 145,000 subscribers.

Yankees lose to Orioles; Hughes, defense fail
[info]fainaot

Yankees starter Phil Hughes considered last night his finest performance of the season — and in many ways, he was right.

He pitched into the sixth inning for just the second time this season and didn’t give up six runs, which he already had done twice in his first four starts.

Nevertheless, four runs in just 5 2/3 innings in a 7-1 loss in The Bronx against a Baltimore lineup that featured three players hitting under .200 — and being outdueled by a lefty who had not won in his previous 14 starts — isn’t what the Yankees are looking for.

BOX SCORE

“I thought this was the best stuff I had all year,” Hughes said. “Take that for what it is. A loss is a loss. I need to get better.”

Matusz walked Russell Martin to start the inning and then got Eduardo Nunez on a pop fly to short. The victory was the 1,000th in the career of Baltimore manager Buck Showalter, who led the Yankees from 1992-95.

Hughes figures to stay in the rotation, at least for now. ‘Apology’ not enough to let Tigers' Young off hook
[info]fainaot

headshotPhil Mushnick

EQUAL TIME

It’s too easy. Can of corn. You can call it in the air.

The moment word hit the Tigers’ Delmon Young had been arrested for a 2:40 a.m. Midtown hassle and assault, you knew an “apology” would follow, an apology “issued” by Young in “a statement.”

It’s the standard modern application for sports figures following suspensions, offensive comments and arrests. Their heartfelt contrition is suspect because they read the words and work of others, those in the public relations/damage control business.

The apologies ring worthless, as sincere as an exploding cigar, hollow as a sinkhole.

The Detroit News

NOW AND HATER: If Delmon Young were truly contrite about his anti-Sematic assault early Friday morning, he should learn about and write an essay on Jewish Tigers legend Hank Greenberg, suggests The Post's Phil Mushnick.

Young: “I sincerely regret what happened last night, I apologize to everyone I affected, the Ilitch family [team owners], the Detroit Tigers organization, my teammates, my family and the great Tigers fans that have supported me since day one.

“I take this matter very seriously and assure everyone that I will do everything I can to improve myself as a player and a person.”

. . . according to a statement issued to the media.

Intelligent folks would have preferred “No comment” or even, “It’s none of your bleepin’ business” to that load of ghost-written cheese. Yeah, Tigers fans, we’re in this together.

If Young’s that noble a dude, how’d he wind up accused of a drunken, anti-Semitic assault at 2:40 a.m.? How come his history as a pro includes two suspensions, including a 50-gamer in the minors for throwing a bat at an umpire and hitting him with it?

And as long as he “sincerely regrets what happened last night,” how about sincerely telling us what happened last night?

But in some quarters, it works. On Saturday, Ch. 4 News anchor David Ushery reported “Young apologized to his team and fans before his arraignment.”

Then, for added insult, Ushery reported, “Sources tell NBC New York that he was intoxicated at the time.”

That was an NBC-NY scoop? It was first reported by NYPost.com and had been reported all day by all the major New York media outlets!

Meanwhile, given that Young has been accused of both racially profiling and assaulting his victim — witnesses claim he was shouting, “F---ing Jews!” — MSNBC’s Rev. Al Sharpton today will lead a demonstration of civil rights activists in front of NYPD HQ to protest Young’s release on a meager $5,000 bail.

Yeah, sure.

Perhaps a more appropriate action would be to have Young, a power hitter, to write a 500-word essay on the greatest slugger in Tigers history, Hank Greenberg, a “F---ing Jew.”

A spokesperson for Young could issue it to the media.
